TALLINN, Jul 11 (SW) - The first qualifying round of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League kicked off on Tuesday with Icelandic champions FH Hafnarfjordur securing a dramatic win away to TVMK Tallinn.
TVMK Tallinn - FH Hafnarfjordur 2-3 Estonian champions TVMK were beaten at the death on Tuesday at home as FH, champions of Iceland, got a 90th-minute goal from Atli Gudnason to snatch an away victory. Tryggvi Gudmundsson opened the scoring for the Icelanders after 33 minutes before Sirgurvin Olfasson doubled the advantage midway through the second half. On the verge of getting blown out of the tie with a return leg in Iceland still to play, TVMK fought back getting goals from Kert Haavistu and a penalty from Latvian international Viktors Dobrecovs to level at 2-2 on 76 mintues. But Gudnason fought back to give the visitors the win at the death. If FH hold on, they will face Legia Warsaw of Poland in the second qualifying round. Linfield - Nova Gorica 1-3 Northern Ireland champions Linfield got their campaign off to a rocky start, falling at home to Slovenia's Nova Gorica, the highest ranked team in the first qualifying round. Enes Demirovic led the Slovenians early on, guiding them to a 2-0 lead after just 27 minutes, but Mark Dickson gave the home side some hope with a penalty just short of the hour mark. However, Jani Sturm extended Gorica's lead back to two goals in the 66th minute. The winner will face Romanian champions Steaua in the next round. Birkirkara - B36 Tórshavn 0-3 Faroe Islands champion B36 have one foot in the second round after a convincing 3-0 victory away to Maltese premiers Birkirkara. The first half belonged to Amed Davy Sylla as he opened the scoring in the 14th minute to give the Nordic side the lead, and Sylla again struck just after the half-hour to make it 2-0. It looked like 2-0 would be the full-time score until Hanus Thorleifsson added a third for the visitors at the death, likely setting up a nice second-round tie against Fenerbahçe. Sioni - FK Baku 2-0 Georgian champions Sioni Bolnisi took advantage of short-handed Azeri side FK Baku in a 2-0 win on Tuesday. After Baku had Vagiz Guliev sent off in the 34th minute and Ramazan Abbasaov dismissed just three minutes later, Sioni struck with goals in the 70th minute from Fridolin Boyorno and in the 90th minute from Vladimir Ugrekhelidze to likely set up a match with Levski Sofia in the next round. Elbasan - Ekranas 1-0 A dramatic winner a quarter-hour from time by Gentian Stojku gave KF Elbasani a narrow advantage in their tie with Ekranas of Lithuania. Elbasani, who won the Albanian league by 11 points last season, will now travel to Lithuania next week trying to lock down a second round matchup with Dinamo Zagreb. F91 Dudelange - Rabotnicki 0-1 Another late goal provided Rabotnicki with the advantage in their tie as they won on the road at Luxembourg's F91 Dudelange. The Macedonians, appearing the Champions League for the second straight season, got a 77th-minute goal from striker Krste Velkoski to lead them to victory and a possible date with Hungarian champions Debrecen in Round 2. Pyunik - Sheriff 0-0 The first leg between Armenian champions Pyunik and Moldovan champions Sheriff ended in a goalless draw on Tuesday in Yerevan. The return leg in Tiraspol will have to determine who faces Spartak Moscow in the next round of play. |
